Top Tips for Understanding Depression

Depression is a very serious condition. It directly affects your quality of life, can cause physical health problems, may cause drinking and drug problems- and can lead to feelings of self harm and suicide. Depression can range from the simple "blues" due to boredom, weather changes, certain times of the year, etc. Or it can evolve into the deeper and more dangerous sort of sadness and utter hopelessness- the type that no change in scenery, daily habits or "good things" are going to change.

In most cases, mild Depression is caused by an emotional reaction or mental stress due to situations around a person, personal heartaches, etc. This type of Depression usually responds well to simple lifestyle changes and antidepressant medication. There's nothing wrong with needing a medication temporarily and needing a change of pace or habit in one's day to day life. Change can be a positive thing when it's helping to get rid of mild Depression.

The more serious forms of Depression are usually (but not exclusively) brought about by traumatic events (death of a loved one, abuse, divorce or a serious change in living circumstances) or a severe chemical imbalance. If you are depressed, remember that there is hope out there and that you can get help.

Often those suffering all types of Depression will be given medication or a combination of drugs until the 'magic' formula is found and you will definitely notice a more upbeat, positive change in the patient. It is essential loved ones continue to provide love and support through the, sometimes very long, phase when different medications are being trialed.

The so called 'stigma' of Depression is fast becoming history with more and more high profile movies stars and athletes admitting they are suffering Depression.

If a friend or loved one is suffering from severe Depression, you must never tell him or her to "snap out of it" or some other form of flippancy. It may be difficult for you to understand, but a person who is severely depressed and/or suicidal truly can't help it and they won't be able to just "get over it" or "snap out of it" simply because they're told to. In some cases, refusing to acknowledge that the problem is severe and not their fault can cause a worse downward spiral and make them feel worse. Someone suffering severe Depression already feels they are a burden on those around them so it is paramount family and friends give the sufferer the support they need.

While it is so important to provide love and support, you must not play "counsellor" to a friend or family member who is depressed. Be aware of your loved one's moods or changes in behavior. Any major changes that last more than two weeks are likely a sign of Depression. These types of changes can include changes in eating (either over-eating or loss of appetite), sleeping more than normal or not sleeping enough (yet seeming to be almost "driven" to do other things besides sleep), negative thoughts or expressions of negativity, a noticeable lack of concentration or inattention, becoming angered or "flying off the handle" at the smallest thing, total change in personality, and unexplained crying.

Be open-minded about Depression when dealing with a friend or family member with Depression. Realise that a diagnosis of Depression doesn't mean that a person can never live a so-called "normal" life, and try to maintain a sense of hope.

If your family member or friend is depressed, make sure you're aware of signs of suicidal behavior- but also remember to maintain a positive attitude and do your best to be supportive while they're dealing with their Depression. Encourage him or her to seek help, and make sure you remain a positive support influence for him or her. Don't take on his or her Depression, but do express caring, concern and a willingness to help.
