Massage Therapy Course

With more and more people turning to medical alternatives, massage therapy is a growing field with a substantial reputation for healing. Training is slowly becoming standardised around the country, with minimum educational requirements, similar exams and portability. If you are looking for a field that allows you to work with people, make them feel better and pays well on a per hour basis, you should seriously consider massage therapy. Here are some tips on how to choose the best massage therapy course for you.

Accreditation

When you start looking for a massage therapy course you will find that there is a wide selection of schools, programs and freestanding options. No matter what choice you pick, make sure the school is nationally accredited. This is very important especially if you wish to take your qualifications interstate to practice.

Curriculum

Consider what kind of massage you wish to perform. Are you hoping to work with elite athletes, in a day spa, medical practitioner’s office or operate out of your home? Browsing online or visiting the TAFE or community college and examining their curriculum is a good way to find out if the school is a good match for you.

Price

It seems like a basic idea, but schools vary tremendously in price. The longer or more acclaimed the program the more you are likely to pay. There are bargains out there though, if you look, but never compromise the quality of a program for a cheaper training school. One of the best ways to do this is to call around and ask local therapists where they studied. If most of them used the same training provider, it is likely to be good.

Location

When you first start a massage program you will only attend a couple days, or a few hours a week. Driving some distance may not seem like a big deal. Further into the program you might have classes, clinic, an internship and study groups running simultaneously and that hour of driving that seemed like a minor issue suddenly becomes a major problem. If at all possible, pick something in your town or move near to your school of choice.

Longevity

Many training providers and community colleges are establishing massage programs to get in on the current popularity of the field. Sometimes these programs are poorly designed, slapped together and use teachers that have little experience in massage. Try to find a program that has been successfully graduating classes for at least five years. They are in a better position to have good teachers, job placement assistance and know how to prepare you for working in your new profession.
